Holiday Carpet Care Tips

November 2, 2017

As we prepare for the holiday season, we want to help you save your carpets from some of the issues we commonly see this time of year.

  1. Leave the dirt where it belongs.... outside!

    • According to Huffington Post in a blog article written in 2014 it takes up to 17 steps before the soles of your shoes are clean!

    • Take them off at the door!

  2. Vacuum... on a regular basis

    • Vacuum as often as possible.

    • Having the highest quality vacuum cleaner doesn't matter if it sits in the closet. The most effective vacuum is the one that's used!

    • For active households it is recommended that high traffic areas be vacuumed a minimum of 3 times per week.

  3. Tend to spots AS SOON as you find them.

    • Its better to treat them late than never, though.

    • NOTE: We do not recommend buying any products off the shelf.

    • SECRET RECIPE FOR SPOT TREATMENT

      • For liquid spills use a white towel and blot up as much as possible

      • Use a little water on the spot to dilute whatever is in the carpet (ink and dye excluded).

      • DO NOT allow the water to saturate.

      • Use only enough to dilute the spot

      • Again, use a white towel to blot up the diluted spot.

      • Apply pressure by placing your foot on the towel and gently rotate the ball of your foot in a circular motion to absorb as much moisture as possible.

      • If the spot remains... give us a call to take care of it from there!

  4. Move furniture from time to time... especially furniture that gets used the most

    • Wiggling feet in the same area over time breaks down carpet fibers

    • It also grinds dirt and oils into the same spot

    • If the furniture is moved around, not only will the areas in front of the furniture get relief, the traffic patterns will be altered.

    • Altered traffic patterns means that the carpet will not develop permenant traffic stains and wear, and the backing/padding will not be crushed in a focused area.

  5. Call TRY IT DRY CARPET CARE for Periodic Professional Cleaning

    • The IICRC suggests that all carpet should be cleaned annually at a minimum

    • If you have pets or children, your carpets should be cleaned bi-annually

    • In some cases, quarterly cleaning is recommended.
